'I Was in Mourning Before He was dead'

Highway to hell: Hugh Laurie poses with a model
in one of Clarke's many impressive photographs

One year ago, the acclaimed photographer Bob Carlos Clarke threw himself in front of a train. Speaking for the first time, his wife Lindsey tells Janie Lawrence what drove a mercurial genius to a desperate act

from The Telegraph (U.K.)

Sometimes Lindsey Carlos Clarke is so hopping mad with her late husband that she stomps off to Brompton Cemetery in south-west London with the sole intention of having a row with him....

You know, if you hadn't said that was Hugh Laurie, I wouldn't have guessed. Did you know he also designed the album cover for Judas Priest's Sin After Sin.

And that's no model... that's the lovely Cameron Diaz!

I don't think that's Cameron Diaz.

It's a great shot, but to a Brit it raises an immediate "Does not compute" error. Hugh Laurie, the guy who played upper class twits in shows like Blackadder and Jeeves and Wooster for years? Where's all this rugged sexiness come from? The incongruity is stark. (Yes, I know about "House" and his award, but I haven't watched it myself.)

As for the article, it rather suggests that sensitive artists can be absolute bastards to live with.

I think it's actually "Boopsie" from Doonesbury.

"House" is the best show on network television, sez me. I'm addicted. Next week it starts a string of all new episodes...can't wait....

P.S. Oh, and to me, what doesn't compute is Bertie Wooster, which is on late sometimes...as a "House" fan I can hardly believe it's the same guy!

Hey Mike, I'm addicted to House too. But there's something awkward about it, the temptation to play God. I think we all have it, we love manufacturing miracles.

Hugh Laurie. The dicotomy between the his Blackadder and Bertie Wooster characters and his Gregory House display what a brilliant actor he really is.

He's musical, too, plays pretty good piano, as heard on late night TV talk shows, and the bits on House.

As far as "rugged" goes, he was an oarsman at Cambridge, evidently in the first eight. His dad was an Olympic gold medalist oarsman, as well.

Lots more throught Google, with the Wiki entry providing a pretty good read:

Bob Carlos Clarke was a photographer of immense talent, he was also a brilliant printer. I have yet to see any prints better than those he'd done.

My wife did her art foundation course with him in England and remembers him as being very obsessive. He was also fond of dumpster diving, he used it as a source of props for his pics.

Its very tragic as his death could have been so easily averted, and its sad that his wife feels she has to have the last word about him in the press when he can't answer back.
