I'm curious as to why you think this is an excellent photo?
I'm curious to know what's random about it.
Me to! Perhaps Mike mixed up some photos...
I'm with you Bob, looks a pretty ordinary stage lights/up the nose pit shot to me.
There's a bunch of folks in the flickr concert photography group do better work every day.

...Yet for some reason they're hanging out on Flickr and Ra Segev is being published in the New York Times. Hmm.

maybe he meant the music?
Quite frankly, I can't imagine Mike of all people enjoying something as mainstream as The Raconteurs.
So what if they're mainstream? Every now and then, the general public has to get something right. ;) I happened to put their cd in just before visiting this site and whilte the photo may not be groundbreaking, it's pretty solid to my eyes.

Hmm. You'd better take a look at the post "OT: Music Notes."
For the time being, anyway, I'll listen to anything Jack White puts out....

Considering most concerts involve stage lights and an elevated stage, how else are photographers supposed to photograph the performers without running around on the stage and ruining the performance?
I enjoy this picture. I may not know much about photography and I may take bad pictures, but I think most commenters here tend to over-analyze every photo put on this blog as though it were the work of the second coming of (insert favorite photographer here) or else it's just plain sh*t. Speaking of which, Annie Leibovitz is awful IMHO.
I was granted the 'priveledge' of shooting these at Leeds festival last month, but was presented with a nasty looking coopyright grab form. So I declined the 'opportunity'.
Maybe it's randomly excellent because he still owns the photo? ;)

Some great stuff all right!

Hmmm, indeed. I think there are a lot of good amatures out there. I am not familiar with Ra Segev in particular so this is not a comment on his work, but getting paid to do something doesn't neccesarily make you better than someone that is not.

And that is why, to me, it looks pretty ordinary. I'm not saying it's a bad shot, but it is exactly the type of shot concert photographers produce day-in day-out. I meant it when I said I couldn't understand what was either excellent or random about it. I don't deny that it's a good shot, but for me there's nothing which elevates it above that.
Here are some other really good Flickr music photogs:

I hit send too quickly...a few more:

it is pretty ordinary and the musicians look pretty dull and unexcited.
It's not a bad photograph, but nothing special.
But, whatever, if you love it, that's great.
It's silly to defend it as a great photograph just cause he gets published, and to negate other's opinions cause they may not.
That comes down to business practices and marketing strategies more than artistic ability.
I get published a good amount in 250,000+ circulation magazines and I'm not that good.
Overall, this is silly to argue about.
