Make sure to read the comments, though--it's probably not such a great idea. For instance, guns have been stolen from O'Hare.

Yes, it is brilliant, and it should work well in the US, but... will it work overseas? Will other countries follow the same procedures?

If you try to fly to most countries with a weapon that you haven't got a local permit and import permission for, be prepared to get escorted to the next returning flight, probably with the gun confiscated for an indeterminate (and quite possibly permanent) duration as contraband.

This may or may not be a good idea in the US but it's a singularily bad idea most everywhere else.

I've had the locks on my luggage cut off and my laptop stolen from checked baggage (last time I did that!), so I don't really think there are any effective deterrents to behind-the-scenes baggage pilferers.
