Celebrity Notes

'...Fucking photographers, you should be shot, you should be all shot. Thank you.'

Elton John, at the Cannes Film Festival last Monday

The crocodilian Reginald Dwight before he met Bernie Toupée

If it's any consolation, Elton, there are a great many photographers who don't actually care about you.

I'd take your picture if you rang the doorbell, but you'd have to pay.

An artist demands his dignity.

... and a great many non-photographers too.

Although he clearly overreacted, a little context would be appropriate. He was being interrupted by screaming photographers during a speech. In fairness, shouldn't we scold them for misbehaving as well?

In fairness to him, I don't think Elton John means photographers like Paul Butzi or John Shaw. I'm pretty sure he means paparazzi. You know, the people who took pictures of Princess Diana as she lay dying in her car.

I'm pretty sick of hearing from Elton John, in more ways than one. Fuckin' revival-act rock Liberace had like four decent albums in the 1970s and that means I've got to listen to him for the rest of my life.

Can too get no satisfaction,

Well, I think the answer to that depends on whether he was objecting to their taking photographs, or to their interrupting.

He could have said "rude bounders who interrupt - they should all be disciplined." But he didn't.

Elton John doesn't like photographers. Fair enough - it's his opinion and his choice. I just hope that from now on, photographers take only the most unflattering photographs of him. Photos of him with his mouth open in unflattering ways, photos of him with his eyes closed, photos of him looking stupid or picking his nose.

I have in mind an ongoing community effort among photographers to enforce, for the remainder of Elton John's life, that only photos which depict him badly will be made. By 'depict him badly' I have in mind something along the lines of Arnold Newman's famous portrait of Alfreid Krupp. See http://www.departures.com/ad/ad_0300_newman.html for the story, and http://www.digitaljournalist.org/issue0312/an01.html for the photo.

While they hate, let them fear.

Maybe old Elton should remember that photographers have made a large contribution towards his progression from Dwight.

Where would he have been without coverage from still and video images? Probably gracefully bald.
