Books for Photo-Dogs
The year's best book may be Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking, but there are some great new photography titles available too. The New York Times recommends a few in this Dec. 4th article,* including two volumes of Disfarmer (I'd certainly just pick one, as a little Disfarmer goes a long way) and An-My Le's remarakble Small Wars. My own must-have—in agreement with the Times' reviewer—would be Friedlander, since I consider him to be the central figure in American photography in the second half of the 20th century. There hasn't been a good retrospective since Harry N. Abrams' 1989 Like a One-Eyed Cat, which is long out of print and now sells for $120-$250 used. The new book is available in both paperback and hardcover.
(Note that Amazon's page for the book is screwed up; it shows the wrong book in its "Look Inside!" feature.)
